TOWN OF AMSTERDAM — Java will start flowing at the newly constructed Starbucks drive-thru cafe later this week.

The new cafe at the northeast corner of the Amsterdam Commons shopping plaza on Route 30 is set to open on Friday, according to a prepared statement from a Starbucks spokesperson.

“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers,” the company spokesperson said.

They did not provide shop hours and the new cafe had not been added to the Starbucks store locator as of Wednesday.

A total of 20 jobs will be created by the opening of the new cafe, which will not impact the walk-in only Starbucks in Target already operating in the same plaza, the spokesperson said.

Opening of the new cafe and drive-thru comes roughly two years after plans for the 2,000-square-foot coffee shop were approved by the town of Amsterdam Planning Board.

Aside from its sister cafe in Target, Starbucks will also be competing for the mugs of coffee lovers with nearby Panera Bread in the same shopping plaza and Dunkin’ on Route 30.

Business development on Route 30 has been buzzing in recent years. A Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Chipotle Mexican Grill each opened in a new plaza in 2022.

A Take 5 Oil Change rapid-service garage is being built along the commercial corridor between Dunkin’ and Burger King.

In addition to new construction, tenants have been secured for several previously vacated commercial spaces.

An O’Reilly Auto Parts store is coming to the former Rite Aid building at the corner of Golf Course Road and Old Brick opened last summer in the former Goodwill space in the Towne Square plaza.
