Alfred Vertucci died on Sept. 13, 2017 at the VA hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. after a long illness. He was born in Fort Johnson N.Y., on June 22, 1934, son of Pasquale and Josephine Vertucci/DeRose, both of Italy. He was the youngest of 12 children and a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, class of 1954. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict, as a flight line mechanic, honorably discharged in 1957 with the rank of buck sergeant.
In his youth, Alfred was very talented athletically and was offered a Yankees minor league contract, but could not meet the age requirement. He was an active father of four children having coached Wee-men and Rookie league baseball as Fort Johnson Youth commissioner.
Alfred’s family was born in Bloomsburg, Pa., and after 1967 raised in Amsterdam and Fort Johnson, N.Y. Alfred earned his real estate license and founded Vertucci Realty. He retired with Century 21 Realty, having earned many achievement-awards for sales and service, earning the respect of many associates in real estate.
He is preceded in death by the following siblings and their spouses, Catherine St. Amour (Albert), Jane Laychak, Susan Hermance (Elmer), Lena McCaffrey, Marion Bellen (Daniel), Elvira Stangle (Clifford), Gabriel Vertucci, Anthony Vertucci, Marguerite Habla (Robert), Eleanor Clairmont (Duane).
Alfred is survived by his brother, Arthur Vertucci (Bernadette) of Fort Johnson, N.Y.; sister-in-laws, Nancy Serviss Vertucci (Gabriel) of Amsterdam, N.Y. and Lestra Vertucci (Anthony) of Fort Johnson, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Leo J. Yodock Jr. (Kathleen) and William Yodock of Bloomsburg, Pa.
Alfred is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary C. Vertucci (Yodock) of Drums, Pa. and children, his son Michael J. Vertucci (Beth Ann) of Elizabethtown, Pa, his daughters Rose Marie Oropallo (Timothy J. Sr.) of Saratoga Springs, Therese Francisco (Donald) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Nicki Ann Howe (Kevin) of Drums, Pa.
Alfred is survived by 12 grandchildren, Mary Theresa Hamilton (Brett) and Anne Marie Vertucci of Charleston, S.C., Angela Rose Vertucci and Michael A. Vertucci of Elizabethtown, Pa. Timothy J. Oropallo Jr. (Katherine) of Lake Clear, N.Y., Allison Marie Oropallo (Gretchen Gottwald) of Petaluma, Calif., Elizabeth Marie Daratsos (Basil) of San Diego, Calif., Bridget Francisco of Jacksonville, Fla., Dr. Aubrey Francisco (Dr. Eric Wang) of Menlo Park, Calif., Brianne Francisco (Christos Tzeremes) of Danbury, Conn., and Gabrielle and Giana Howe of Drums, Pa.
Alfred is survived by five great-grandchildren, William and Matthew Hamilton, FinnLee Rose and Gunner James Oropallo, and George James Daratsos.
On Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, the family is attending 10 a.m. mass at St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam, N.Y. Following the mass, family and friends may pay their respects at Riley Funeral Home on 110 Division St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Friends and family are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Good Shepard R.C. Church, 87 South Hunter Highway, Drums, PA 18222. Full military honors will be accorded following the mass.
