REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — The Amsterdam 14U and 12U travel baseball teams both opened up pool play by going 2-0 Friday in the 2017 Summer Slugfest, held at the Sports at the Beach complex.

Amsterdam’s 14U team kicked off its tournament with a pair of wins, topping Jersey Shore Baseball 2-1 and cruising to a 10-0 rout of S.W. Outlaws.

Against Jersey Shore, Matt Hughes’ RBI single in the fifth inning provided the difference in Amsterdam’s win. Michael Rocas pitched all five innigns for Amsterdam, allowing just two hits and striking out nine. Rocas also drove in the tying run when his groundout to short brought home Tommy Ziskin in the fourth.

In the fifth, Michael Magliocca led off for Amsterdam with a walk, before a one-out single by C.J. Durinick and a walk to Dane Dillenback loaded the bases for Hughes, whose RBI single won the game. Amsterdam won despite facing Jersey Shore ace Justin O’Connor — whose fastball clocked in at 88.5 mph — for three innings.

Things went much easier for Amsterdam 14U in the team’s second game, as the club put up eight runs in the third inning — highlighted by a two-run single from Nicholas Antonelli — in a win over S.W. Outlaws that was stopped after three innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Matthew Murphy went 2-for-2 with a run batted in, Dillenback laced an RBI single, Carson Cotugno and Tyler Williamson each lofted sacrifice flies, Rocas drilled a double and Ziskin, Durinick and Nic Carbone all contributed singles. Williamson held the Outalws to one hit in three shutout innings, facing just one batter over the minimum and piling up seven strikeouts.

The 14U squad, which sits atop the 12-team standings through one day based on runs allowed, concludes pool play today with games against the Sykesville Cyclones and Long Island Gulls.

Amsterdam 12U started with a bang Friday, getting home runs from Nico Bianco, Marco Bianco and Luke Tambasco in a 7-2 win over the Pasadena Eagles. They followed that up with a 4-2 win over the Churchville Curve, getting an RBI single from Marco Bianco and base hits from Ben Huckans, Kai Brennan and Noah Marshall.

The 12U team will wrap up pool play today with games against the Northern Valley Coyotes and Motus Academy Avengers.

Both Amsterdam teams will conclude their tournaments Sunday, playing in either the championship playoffs or consolation rounds.
