Spencer Cotugno stole third and scored on an overthrow in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Five Corners Mobil a dramatic 5-4 walk off victory over Patriot Federal Bank to sweep the Amsterdam Youth Baseball League Majors Division best-of-3 semifinal series.
It was a short series, but one that featured many lead changes and thrilling finishes. Five Corners Mobil won Game 1 on Thursday night, posting a 7-6 victory in eight innings. Of the six Majors and Minors playoff games played thus far, three have gone extra innings.
“It was a great series,” said Five Corners Mobil head coach David Huckans. “We’ve been working with the boys to improve their hitting for the last two weeks, trying to get the bottom two thirds of our lineup to hit.
“After the last game with them (Patriot Federal Bank), I knew we would have a close game and one run could make the difference,” continued Huckans. “Most of our players have been coming an hour before the game
Five Corners Mobil will play the winner of the Shorty’s Southside-River Ridge best-of-3 series beginning Friday night. The Shorty’s Southside-River Ridge semifinal series is now tied at 1-1 after Shorty’s posted an 11-6 victory over River Ridge on Saturday night. Game 2 is slated for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Isabel’s Field.
The first three innings between Five Corners Mobil and Patriot Federal Bank lasted less than 40 minutes as Patriot Federal Bank starter Anthony Antonelli and Cotugno engaged in a pitcher’s duel with neither giving up a run.
Antonelli, an 11-year-old, allowed two hits while striking out three and walking none while Cotugno faced the minimum nine batters – striking out six and walking none.
“It was a good season,” said Patriot Federal Bank head coach Ross Marshall. “We just fell short in both playoff games. Anthony (Antonelli) did a great job today keeping us in the game.”
Ben Huckans had a triple and double to lead Five Corners Mobil. Mason Gieseler and D.J. Wallace added a double apiece and Cotugno lined a single.
“Today we had Jordan Olmack, Shawn Kuehling, Mason Gieseler and Luis Ruiz come super early, working on bunting,” Huckans said. “When it came time to play the game the extra work paid off.”
Kody Rogers had two singles and Noah Marshall had a single to lead Patriot Federal Bank.
Shorty’s Southside 11,
River Ridge 6
Quinn Healy lined a double and two singles and Cooper Priamo added a double and single to lead Shorty’s Southside to a win over River Ridge and tie the best of 3 semifinal series 1-1.
The deciding Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Isabel’s Field.
Derek Goebel, Kai Brennan, Jake Pavone and Vincent Bottisti chipped in with a single apiece for the winners.
Emmanuel Santos had a double and two singles, Nicolino Bianco and Marco Bianco had two singles apiece, Brady Foss added a double and Ryan Reagan had a single to lead River Ridge.
