The postseason usually brings out the best in players at all age levels and once again, solid overall play was on display in the Amsterdam Youth Baseball League playoffs Friday at Isabel’s Field.

On Thursday, the Majors Division two best-of-3 semifinal series got underway with a walk-off ending followed by an extra-inning classic.

On Friday, it was the Minors Division’s turn and top-seed Firefighters needed all of its firepower to top Miller Printing 9-8 in nine innings in the opening game of the Amsterdam Youth Baseball League Minors Division best-of-3 semifinal series.

Game 1 of the other best-of-3 Minors semifinal series saw Amsterdam Lodge #84 notch an 11-9 victory over Amsterdam PBA late Friday night.

Daniel Menzies delivered the game-wnning hit for Firefighters – lining a single to right field scoring Patrick Vidulich from third base. Vidulich was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a passed ball.

Vidulich was also the winning pitcher.

“We made the right plays to the right bases,” said Amsterdam Firefighters head coach Jeff Urbanczyk. “All games in the playoffs are so competitive. Hats off to them (Miller Printing). They played a great game.”

Miller Printing advanced into the semifinal round after posting a 10-7 victory over Deemer’s Contracting in a one-game play-in contest on Wednesday.

“It was a well played game,” said Miller Printing head coach Ruben Perez. “Both teams cheered for the other team. These kids will always remember this game.”

Maddy Gorhing had a double and two singles to lead Firefighters. Menzies added three singles and Patrick Vidulich, Victoria Vidulich and Rhys Urbanczyk all had a single apiece.

Caleb Miller lined two singles and drove in three runs to lead Miller Printing. Also, Devon Armer had two singles and Damien Pearo, Gio Obijo and Jesus Torres contributed with a single apiece, Torres pitched five solid innings of relief.

The two teams will meet against in Game 2 scheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m. Amsterdam PBA and Amsterdam Lodge #84 will play their Game 2 on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

The Majors Division takes center stage today at 5 p.m. with Five Corners Mobil taking a 1-0 lead into Game 2 against Patriot Federal Bank and top-seed River Ridge takes a 1-0 lead into its series against Shorty’s Southside at 7:30 p.m. Both games are at Isabel’s Field.
