JOHNSTOWN — Mike Brown homered and threw six strong innings on the mound, and the Johnstown baseball team topped Broadalbin-Perth, 8-1, in a Section II Class B quarterfinal game Thursday at Johnstown High School.
Brown hit a three-run home run and Trevor Porter belted a two-run homer for the Sir Bills to help build up the lead. Brown was 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. He also started on the mound and limited B-P to a run on three hits over six innings while striking out three and walking four on 98 pitches.
Ethan Wager singled and drove in a run for 12th-seeded Johnstown, which was coming off a first-round upset of No. 5 seed Schuylerville. Derek Lee added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Jimmy Sargent singled and drove in a run, Alex Gardner singled and scored and Ryan Zajaceskowski chipped in a base hit for 13th-seeded B-P, which knocked off No. 4 seed Coxsackie-Athens in the first round.
The game was halted due to rain after six innings, and while initially it was considered suspended, following consultation with the Section II baseball handbook and Section II Baseball Coordinator Mike DeMagistris, the result was upheld as a final.
Johnstown will face No. 1 seed Saratoga Catholic in the semifinals Saturday at Park Terrace Elementary in Gloversville.

The Cougars were unable to follow up Tuesday’s thrilling first-round win over Waterford-Halfmoon, falling to No. 3 seed Hoosic Valley.
The Indians will face No. 7 seed Chatham in the semifinals Saturday at Shuttleworth Park.

Fort Plain led 1-0 after three innings in a game that featured multiple delays. The Class D quarterfinal contest will be resumed today at 4 p.m. in Fort Plain.
