Galway wins WAC volleyball tournament

CANAJOHARIE — The Galway Golden Eagles captured the championship Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference girls volleyball tournament, going 8-2 in pool play before beating Canajoharie in the semifinals and pulling out a 2-1 win over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in the championship match.

Galway beat Canajoharie 25-19 in the semis, then beat ND-BG 19-25, 25-22, 25-21 in the final amtch. Britney Kenyon had 16 kills and 10 blocks in the finals to go along with four kills and three blocks in the semis.

Lindsay Zwisa had 15 kills and 21 digs in the finals and finished the day with 66 kills, 68 digs, 58 service points and 15 aces. Abbie Pritchard compiled 10 aces and 77 digs throughout the day, Emily Smith had 51 digs, Schuyler Arnold totaled 98 assists for the tournament and Carlee Horstmann added 33 kills and 10 blocks.


Section II Playoffs

Class C

Galway 1, Stillwater 0

Erik Mathews scored the lone goal of the match in the first half as the sixth-seeded Golden Eagles knocked off No. 3 seed Stillwater in the quarterfinals.

Shane Brownell made eight saves for Galway to secure the shutout.

Stillwater goalkeeper Robbie Varvaro made nine saves.

Class C

Cambridge 1, Galway 0 (OT)

Grace Snyder broke a scoreless tie with a goal early in the second 10-minute overtime period, and eighth-seeded Cambridge held on over the final nine minutes to beat ninth-seeded Galway and advance to the quarterfinals.
