Dane Dillenback lined three singles and drove in two runs, and the Amsterdam defense turned over three double plays en route to a 9-3 victory over US Academy in an Eastern New York Travel Baseball League 14-and-under baseball game at Shuttleworth Park on Sunday.
It was the first loss of the 2017 fall season for US Academy.
Amsterdam, coming off an 8-7 victory over the New York Storm 14-and-under team on Saturday, put in a solid defensive showing with a 1-6-3 double play in the second inning, a 6-4 double play in the fifth inning and a 4-6-3 double play in the sixth inning.
In the second inning double play, pitcher Matthew Murphy fielded a ground ball, threw it to shortstop Carson Cotugno, who was covering at second base and Cotugno rifled it over to first baseman Nicholas Antonelli. The second double play featured Cotugno catching a line drive and quickly unloading the ball to second baseman Michael Magliocca to get the US Academy runner out and the third and final double play started when Magliocca snatched a grounder, tossed it over to Cotugno covering at second who threw it to Antonelli, who scooped the ball at first.
Amsterdam got solid pitching from Murphy, Magliocca, Dillenback and Cotugno. They combined to allow six hits while striking out six. Cotugno had three of those strikeouts in closing out the win in the ninth inning.
For Amsterdam, C.J. Durinick added a double and single and scored three runs and Murphy lined two singles. Also, Lucca Quatrini and Magliocca chipped in with a single apiece and Cotugno scored two runs.
Amsterdam returns to action on Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. game against the Tri-City Bombers and Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest against the Northeast Hurricanes. Both games will be played at Shuttleworth Park.
