Vargas lifts AHS past Gloversville

GLOVERSVILLE — Kevin Vargas scored an unassisted goal in the second half that stood up as the winner as the Amsterdam boys soccer team notched a 1-0 win over Gloversville in Foothills Council action at Gloversville High School.

With the win, Amsterdam improved to 2-8 overall and 2-7 in Foothills Council play. It’s the first time in four seasons as a member of the Foothills that the Rams have won two league games in a season, and the first league win over a Foothills member other than Johnstown.

The Rams will be back in action Friday at Scotia-Glenville and then play Cairo-Durham on Saturday in the consolation game of the Fonda-Fultonville All-Sports Booster Club Tournament.

Scotia-Glenville 2, Broadalbin-Perth 0

Jared O’Connor and Matt Williams scored a goal apiece to send the Foothills Council South Division-leading Tartans to a win over B-P.

Western Athletic Conference

Fonda-Fultonville 1, Canajoharie 0

Oscar Ramerez scored the game-winner in the 75th minute as the Braves pulled out a hard-fought win over Canajoharie.

Mitch Araya made two saves and recorded the shutout for Fonda-Fultonville, which finished with a 14-2 advantage in shots.

Jared Bentz made nine saves for Canajoharie.

Mayfield 2, Middleburgh 0

Alex Ringer and Colby Brandow scored 11 minutes apart in the first half as the Panthers kept up their undefeated run with a win over Middleburgh.

Daniel Leach and Dylan Bumpus assisted on the goals for Mayfield, and Evan Lehr notched the shutout with six saves.

Will Bankston made 10 saves for Middleburgh.

Galway 3, B-K-W 0

The Golden Eagles got a goal and an assist each from Erik Matthews and Jake Restivo in their win over Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

Mike Zelezniak also scored for Galway, Carson Scribner added an assist and Henry Flint made 10 saves to preserve the shutout.

B-K-W goalie Tyler Goodemote was credited with nine stops.

OESJ 3, Schoharie 0

The Wolfpack got goals from Trent Barker, Jack Brundage and Tyler Leon to record a win over Schoharie.

Schoharie goalie Jake Fagnani turned away 11 shots.

GIRLS SOCCER

Western Athletic Conference

Canajoharie 4, Fonda-Fultonville 0

Meghan Dingman finished with two goals an an assist in the Lady Cougars’ win over Fonda-Fultonville.

Abigal Smith and Allison Lamb also scored for Canajoharie, with assists from Madison Crouse and Taya Yacobucci.

Schoharie 5, OESJ 0

Carrie Krohn scored a hat trick and added an assisted for the unbeaten Lady Indians in their win over OESJ.

Katie Krohn added a goal and an assist, Meghan Krohn scored and Adrianna Cornell chipped in an assist for Schoharie.

OESJ got 16 saves from goalie Ashley Shelmandine.

Mayfield 3, Middleburgh 1 (OT)

Cam Meca scored a pair of goals in overtime to send the Lady Panthers to victory.

Taryn LaFontaine added a goal and an assist for Mayfield, with Sydney Sheldon also providing an assist. Goalie Syd Benton made two saves.

Kelsey Terrell scored for Middleburgh, which got eight saves from goalie Ruby Acker.

VOLLEYBALL

Foothills Council

Queensbury 3, Amsterdam 0

Katie Geruso and Katie Johnson each had six kills and Bailey Gengel contributed 23 assists as the Spartans topped Amsterdam by scores of 25-7, 25-15 and 25-13.

Isabella Salatino and Brooke Taylor added five kills apiece for Queensbury.

Amsterdam was led by three kills each from Nicole DeRose and Adrianna Santiago. Santiago also contributed two assists and three aces.

GIRLS TENNIS

Foothills Council

Amsterdam 5, South Glens Falls 2

The Lady Rams won all five singles matches, taking four of them in straight sets, to pick up the win over South High.

Molly Monge, Prabha Singh, Natalie Flint and Olivia Fiorillo won in straight sets for AHS. Brianna Ziobro overcame dropping the first set to Averie Mallison in a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win.

South Glens Falls got on the board with wins in both doubles matches.
