Solo back in lineup after surgery

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) -- Four months after having wrist surgery, Hope Solo seemingly is ready to return to the starting lineup for the United States women's soccer team.

While Tom Sermanni isn't ready to say whether Solo will start Thursday against South Korea at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., the U.S. coach said Tuesday that just having his goaltender back on the field is a plus for his team.

It showed last weekend, when Solo played for the first time since her surgery.

Taking over in the second half of a 4-1 win over South Korea at Foxborough, Mass., on Saturday night, the 31-year-old and two-time Olympic gold medalist returned in style after her layoff. With the U.S. leading 2-1, Solo dove to her right and pushed a shot by Ji Soyun wide of the net.

New arena for Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Years of talk about building an arena capable of hosting professional sports and big-name concerts yielded an announcement Tuesday that casino giant MGM Resorts International and entertainment company AEG will build a privately financed 20,000-seat indoor venue on the Las Vegas Strip.

Construction on the $350 million arena should start next summer on land that MGM Resorts owns between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts, the two companies said in a joint announcement. Completion is expected by spring 2016.

The international design firm Populous will draw up plans for premium seating and hospitality areas for entertainment and sports events, the statement said. Populous designed London's O2 arena, Berlin's O2 World arena and Kansas City's Sprint Center, among other projects.

Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts and Los Angeles-based AEG expect their equity contributions will be augmented by private third-party financing from as-yet unnamed sources. Naming rights are on the table. No professional sports teams have committed to the deal.

The arena is expected to be a centerpiece of an outdoor pedestrian mall featuring restaurants and retail shops stretching from Las Vegas Boulevard to Frank Sinatra Drive.
