A successful birthday bash

To the editor:

It was truly a "beautiful day in the neighborhood" on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Amsterdam Free Library. We had such a wonderful time. Our special guests, the DAR, the Masons, Sen. Tkaczyk, Assemblyman Santabarbara, Congressman Tonko, Ward II councilmember Valerie Beekman of the Amsterdam City Council, and MVLS director Eric Trahan.

We thank the many vendors, community members, out-of-town visitors, the board of trustees, the Friends of the Library who attended. Thank you to those who baked cupcakes for us, especially the professionals who donated their goods and services to the library -- Linda Sweet, Cakes by JoAnn and Dolce -- and those who gave of their time to help with serving and cleanup. The entertainment by Cupcake the Clown, Josh Casano, and Jump Daddies Swing Band was well received and a fantastic showing of our local talent. Thank you to those who made, donated and helped put together quilts and baskets for our raffle.

We can't possibly name everyone who helped put this day together. The hot beverages were donated by SM Roofing, magnets donated by Music Man Entertainment; cold beverages came from Rockton Pizza. With a big assist from our committee chairs John Naple, Lee Miller, Robin Kappler, Maribeth Sizemore, Gordon Beebe and Gloria Martuscello, our 110th birthday party was a great success. Thank you to the employees and volunteers who kept the children entertained with crafts and stories.

We also thank the many businesses and individuals for their financial support. The funds raised are being put to good use for the much needed replacement of our 65-year-old boiler. Last, but not least, we thank The Recorder for their constant support and the publishing of our news.

Thank you to the veterans

To the editor:

I stopped at a red light in Mount Airy, N.C., a while ago. A young fellow walked across in front of my car, waived and said, "Thank you, veteran."

That was very touching and I want to pass along a thank you to the veterans. Thank you for your service to our country. God bless America and our troops.

Vietnam veteran (Army),

Another successful dinner

To the editor:

The Mount Carmel 2013 spaghetti dinner was a huge success. A special thank you goes out to our generous donors: Southside Food Co. and L'Ultimo Pastoria, the Wine Barrell, Shorty's Southside. Losurdo's, Stewarts Route 5S, Slezak Petroleum and Vinnie Rossi.

We are also grateful for the groups and individuals who donated the bountiful raffle baskets. And, of course, we could not have been so successful without all of the volunteer workers. Everyone gave it their all. Also, thanks to all of you who supported the dinner by purchasing tickets, donating and attending our annual parish fund raiser.

It was a worthwhile effort. Grazie.

Toys for Tots seeks your support

To the editor:

The 2013 Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign is fully under way. Volunteers have distributed over 60 collection boxes throughout Fulton and Montgomery counties at various locations. At a time when many families are still without means, we ask that you please remember Toys for Tots as you are out and about shopping. If you can, pick up one extra toy and drop it into one of our familiar boxes.

Toys for Tots is also asking for your support in some additional toy and fundraising efforts. Along with the drop boxes, there will be several special events conducted in the area. Once again some of our faithful sponsors are helping our campaign. The following businesses are offering coupon incentives with the donation of a toy: Steet Toyota, Ruby & Quiri, Castiglione Jewelers, Livingston's Furniture, Subway, and Unique Expressions. Please stop in to their locations for further information. Also, the Amsterdam Marching Rams will be conducting their 15th annual "Light up the Sky" event during December with all toy donations going to Toys for Tots.

Again, we are conducting our "Buy a Choo Choo" campaign. For a monetary donation, you can purchase a Toys for Tots train cutout and have it displayed within the establishment with your name on it. The funds raised through this effort help to purchase additional toys as needed for area children. The locations where the choo choos are available are Palmer Pharmacy, Vintage Cafe and the Railside Cafe in Johnstown, Fuel & Food in Mayfield, Jackie's Diner in Vail Mills, The Winners Circle in Fonda, the Pine Tree Rifle Club and the 5S Diner in Fort Plain.

On Nov. 15 we will be in the Johnstown holiday parade and will be accepting toys and on Dec. 2 during the Broadalbin holiday parade, we will set up in Pizza Supreme accepting toys.

For a complete list of toy drop locations, our supporters or any other information concerning this year's campaign, please visit our web site at: www.toysfortots.org. If your business or organization would like to sponsor a special event, or if you have any further questions about this year's campaign, please contact John Pradelski at 762-8699 or by email: t4tdet787@nycap.rr.com. Thank you.

John Pradelski,
