Top 10 students in the AHS class of 2014

Maxine Petrosino is the valedictorian of Amsterdam High School's class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

She has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Mock Trial Team (Captain), Club Interact (Director), Masterminds (Captain), NYS Poetry Out Loud (Finalist), Spanish Club and Varsity Tennis.

Maxine received the following scholarships and awards: the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award for dedication to Social Justice, the President's Volunteer Service Award for completing 100 hours of service in one year, Excellence in Economic Understanding from Yale University, recognition as a YMCA Outstanding Senior, as well as for the HOBY Leadership Conference.

Maxine is the daughter of Bill and Linda Petrosino of Amsterdam. She plans to attend the University of California-Berkeley. She became interested in law during her time spent serving on the mock trial team at Amsterdam High School and through taking a Criminal Justice class at the College of St. Rose. She hopes to study the intersection between brain development/cognitive capacities and the legal system.

Rebekah Izzo is the salutatorian of Amsterdam High School's class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

Rebekah has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Student Government (Senior Class President), After School Bible Study (Leader), Sunday School Teacher, Wish List Organizer, and employed by Cakes by Joann.

She has received the following scholarships and awards: the YMCA Outstanding Senior Student Award, Student of the Quarter in AP Classes, Principal's List, and is a New York State Scholar Student Recipient.

Rebekah is the daughter of Christopher and Kathy Izzo of Amsterdam. She plans to attend The Belanger School of Nursing to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (Maternity/Pediatrics). Rebekah has always had a love for children and a compassion for helping others and believes that specializing in maternity or pediatrics will be a rewarding and challenging venture.

Leilei Secor is the third ranked student in the class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

She has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Student Government, Key Club, First Robotics, Marching Band, Volleyball, Track, and runs her own Jewelry Business.

Leilei has received the following scholarships and awards: 2014 C-SPAN Student Cam Honorable Mention, the YMCA Outstanding Senior Student Award, and the NFIB National Young Entrepreneur Finalist 2014 Award.

She is the daughter of Dahn Secor and Debora Fitzdam of Hagaman.

She plans to attend the University of Virginia where she will major in Business. Leilei chose a major in Business because she would like to start her own business upon graduation.

Ashley Adair is the fourth ranked student in the class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

Ashley has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Student Government (President), Class Officer, Varsity Girls Swim Team, Lifeguarding, and baby-sitting.

She has received the following scholarships and awards: $60,000 (4 year) Scholarship to Clarkson, $15,000 Merit Scholarship to Quinnipiac, $7,500 Merit Scholarship to RIT, NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Award for Swim, Student of the Quarter Award (all four years), and Principal's List.

Ashley is the daughter of Timothy and Donna Adair of Amsterdam. She plans to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology where she will study Biotechnology with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences. She has always been interested in Science and studying Biotechnology as a major will allow her to contribute to society in more ways than one.

Andrew Rouse is the fifth ranked student in the class of 2014.

He will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math.

Andrew has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society (President), Student Government, Key Club, Robotics (9,10), Masterminds (9,10), Varsity Baseball, and Varsity Basketball.

He has been awarded the following scholarships and awards: Section II Scholar Athlete Award (Big 10 Class A), YNN Scholar Athlete, AHS Baseball and Basketball Scholar Athlete Awards, 1st Team Big 10 All-Star for Baseball, and recognition in the Amsterdam Recorder for 6th Player of the Year for Baseball.

Andrew is the son of Barry and MaryLynn Rouse of Hagaman. He plans to attend Marist College majoring in Physics or Biomedical Sciences. Andrew fell in love with Physics in 11th grade because it had the perfect combination of Math and Science. He chose Marist because it offered his choice of major and he will have the opportunity to play baseball.

Michael Hugo is the sixth ranked student in the class of 2014.

He will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

Michael has been involved in the following activities: Marching Band, Jazz Band, Drama Club, and performing locally with studio groups.

He has received the following scholarships and awards: the Clarkson Achievement Award, NYSBDA NYS Honors Jazz Band, and Outstanding Soloist at Fonda Jazz Festival.

Michael is the son of Victor and Sandra Hugo of Amsterdam. He plans to attend Schenectady County Community College and major in Music Performance/Jazz Studies. Music has gone from being a hobby to a form of sustenance in his life. Michael credits the music department at Amsterdam High School for helping him realize his dream, and he believes SCCC will allow him the opportunity to grow as a musician while preparing him to further his education.

Zachary Farina is the seventh ranked student in the class of 2014.

He will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math.

Zachary has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Medical Explorers, Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Drama Club (lights crew and pit orchestra), Masterminds, and Varsity Tennis.

He has been awarded the following scholarships and awards: the University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Junior Award, and Honorary Science Award.

Zachary is the son of Carlo Farina Jr., of Gloversville and Christine Przybylowicz of Amsterdam. He plans to attend Siena College majoring in Biochemistry. He chose Siena because of its rigorous biochemistry program in hopes that it will prepare him for medical school and his future career as an Oncologist.

Michaela Kilgallen is the eighth ranked student in the class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math.

Michaela has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Student Government, Key Club, FIRST Robotics, Drama Club, Select Choir, Varsity Soccer and Dance.

She has received the following scholarships and awards: 2014 C-SPAN Student Cam Honorable Mention, and Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship Scholarship (Finalist).

Michaela is the daughter of Michael and Linea Kilgallen of Amsterdam. She plans to attend Stony Brook University to study journalism. Michaela has always enjoyed writing and looks forward to the exciting, fast paced life of a journalist.

Meghan Calhoun is the ninth ranked student in the class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math.

Meghan has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Varsity Soccer, Basketball, and Church Youth Group.

She has received the following scholarships and awards: $60,000 Scholarship to Elmira, NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Award (Soccer), Student of the Quarter in AP Classes, and Principal's List.

Meghan is the daughter of Scott and Marion Calhoun of Amsterdam. She plans to attend The Belanger School of Nursing. She enjoys studying Science and caring for people and nursing will allow her to fulfill her future goals.

Lauren Corcuera is the 10th ranked student in the class of 2014.

She will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

Lauren has been involved in the following activities: National Honor Society, Drama Club (President), Stage Crew, Props, and Color Guard (Captain).

She has received the following scholarships and awards: the Edwin and Nora Hardies Scholarship, GFWC Century Club of Amsterdam, Sandra H. Zirlin Art Award, and Drama Technical Award.

Lauren is the daughter of Peter Corcuera and Cheryl Corcuera of Amsterdam. She plans to attend Emerson College where she will major in Theatrical Design and Technology. Lauren's appreciation for theatrical design and technology grew from her experiences working with the Amsterdam High School's Drama Club stage crew.
