10 Braves named first-team all-stars

After a season in which they reached the Section II Class C semifinals, the Fonda-Fultonville Braves had 13 players honored on the 2012 Class C South Division All-Star Team, including 10 representatives on the first team.

Earning first-team recognition for the Braves were running back Pat Hart, wide receiver Brandon Baker, offensive guard Dom Neri, offensive tackle Tyler Cranker, linebacker Zac Nowak, defesive backs Kevin Twardzik and Ryan Derby, defensive linemen Will Turner and Eric Moyer and punter Jake Sammons.

Fonda-Fultonville also got second-team nods for Russ Williams at quarterback, Zak Shaw at center and Josh Maybury at linebacker, while Sammons was named a second-team defensive back in addition to his selection as a punter on the first team.

The South Division MVP was Chatham's Jesse Whiteman, with Taylor Dockstader of Watervliet earning Offensive Player of the Year honors and Chatham's Al Kelly earning the division's Defensive Player of the Year. The overall Class C MVP was Brad Burns of state champion Hoosick Falls.

AHS bowling team tops LaSalle, 5-2

TROY -- Ben Patrick fired a 536 series and Billy McGaffin added a 535 as the Amsterdam High School bowling team notched a 5-2 victory Monday over LaSalle Institute.

Jordan Crandall's 555 triple led LaSalle.

Amsterdam (17-4) won the match 2,950-2,652 on total pins. The Rams are back in action today at Bishop Maginn.

Western Athletic Conference

Canajoharie 4, Fort Plain 0

Damon Mason's 225-583 effort paced the Cougars in a sweep of Fort Plain.

Mike Bowman added a 224-560 series for Canajoharie, which won 2,695-2,233 on total pins. David Wilday's 193-492 triple was the top performance for Fort Plain.

GIRLS BOWLING

Fort Plain 4, Canajoharie 0

Krista Kazillas and Beth Mallett led the way for Fort Plain as the Lady Hilltoppers posted a 1,754-1,589 win on total pins.

Kiara Putnam's 182-510 led Canajoharie in defeat.

Community swim lesson at Lynch

The GASD Community Swim Program is holding a lesson tonight at Lynch Literacy Academy from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Cost is $5. All participants must be accompanied by someone at least 21 years old. The swim lesson will be followed by water aerobics from 6 to 7 p.m., and then open swim from 7 to 8 p.m.
