Shawn Patrick Fitzgerald, 31, of Perth, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital on Wednesday November 14th, 2012 with his family by his side. He had been hospitalized since November 9th after being stricken at home.

Born on Christmas Day in 1980, he was the son of John and MaryAnn Fitzgerald of Vail Mills, NY. He was the greatest Christmas gift his family ever received.

Shawn graduated from Broadalbin-Perth High School in 1999 and also attended HFM Vo-Tec and Schenectady County Community College for culinary arts. Shawn previously worked for Aramark, cooking at the General Electric Campus. He also previously worked as a cook for Host-Marriot, Amsterdam Printing CO, and Mill Road Country Club in Latham. At the time of his death, Shawn was a full time stay at home single father to his son, Tyler.

Shawn had many hobbies which included cooking and grilling. A highlight of summer was having Shawn's delicately prepared steaks or ribs off the grill. Shawn also liked to garden and recently started growing vegetables and fruits in an indoor hydroponic garden, which he took a lot of pride in. Shawn loved the music of Pink Floyd and enjoyed attending tribute concerts in the area with his sister. Shawn also enjoyed working with stereo equipment and electronics, a hobby that started when he was only in middle school. Shawn's favorite pastime, was spending time with his son, whether it be playing basketball, riding on his snowmobile, or just watching a movie together. Shawn valued every moment watching his son grow and learn.

Shawn will be remembered for his tough exterior but soft interior. He will also be remembered as being a person who was able to work through a lot of struggles in his life. He was always a fighter, right down to his last breath.

Besides his parents, survivors include his son, Tyler P. Fitzgerald of Perth, his sister Wendy Moore and husband Jeff of Broadalbin. His aunt and uncle David and Annette Makacynas of Tribes Hill, NY, who were also his Godparents. His uncle, James Fitzgerald of Perth, NY. He is also survived by close family and friends, his "aunts and uncles," Robert and Carol Ashley and Elaine and Donald Holdridge all of Amsterdam, as well as cousins. He also leaves behind his close friends, Doug Szyjkoski of Amsterdam and Kristen Passino of Broadalbin.

His canine "daughter" Jordan, a pug named after his love of Michael Jordan sneakers and clothing, is also grieving the loss of her "daddy."

Funeral services will be held on Sunday November 18, 2012 at 5:00P.M. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY with Rev. Victor Polito presiding. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 2:00P.M. to 5:00P.M. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family in order to develop a scholarship fund for Tyler.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the first responders from GAVAC and Perth VFD for their efforts, as well as the staff in the ICU unit at Ellis Hospital for their compassion and dedication to Shawn's care and comfort.
