Thomas Roger Achtyl, 66, entered into eternal life Monday, October 22, 2012.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Thomas was one of four surviving sons of Victoria and Henry Achtyl.

He spent his early childhood at his parents home on Bussendorfer Road in Hamburg, New York where he and his brothers attended school and worked with their parents in their Dad's greenhouses.

He attended bishop Timon High School and then went on to Siena College where he graduated Cum Laude with a Degree in Mathematics. He next attended both the University of Southern California where he earned a degree in Chemistry and St. Louis University where he earned a Masters Degree in Mathematics. Before earning his M.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Thomas served in the United States Navy and was stationed on both the USS Point Defiance and the USS Okinawa. While practicing medicine Tom attended RPI where he earned a Masters in Business Administration through their Executive MBA Program.

Thomas' medical career started at St. Clare's Hospital in their Family Practice Medicine residency program. He served as an Emergency Room Physician at Mary McClellan Hospital and then went on to private practice. He was a founding partner of Amsterdam Family Practice. Thomas served patients in a solo practice, Amsterdam Primary Care, before moving to New Hampshire where he worked for the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, New Hampshire.

Thomas' many interests included raising orchids, photography and running. An accomplished photographer, Tom's favorite subjects were wildflowers, landscapes and of course, his beloved orchids.

He served as president of the Northeastern New York Orchid Society and was a member of the American Orchid Society.

Thomas was a member of the Fulmont Road Runners. He ran nine marathons including the Boston Marathon three times. The highlight of this running career was when Thomas participated in the Olympic Torch Relay where he carried the Olympic Torch through Albany on December 30, 2001.

Thomas was the beloved husband of Patricia Achtyl, loving father of Daniel (Tina), Bryan and Jennifer Achtyl and dear brother of Kenneth (Elizabeth), Joseph (Diane) and Michael (Millie) Achtyl. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was held in SS Peter and Paul Church in Hamburg, New York. A memorial service in this area is pending.
