MAYFIELD — A Broadalbin man is dead and a woman injured after their vehicle struck a utility pole just outside the village of Broadalbin in Sunday's pre-dawn hours.

Troopers say Justin DePaula, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Melissa Vincent, 38, was airlifted to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries. She's listed in stable condition.

A news release says the pair were traveling westbound on Route 155 in a speeding 2009 Mercedes. Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira said the car failed to negotiate a curve and struck a signpost.

Troopers said the car sheared off a power pole, and struck an earthen embankment before landing on its side on a lawn adjacent to the roadway.

The news release did not say who was driving, and did not say whether they were wearing seat belts, but both were ejected upon impact. When asked those questions, and whether alcohol was a factor, a state police spokesman said "all aspects are still under investigation. There won't be any more information released for several days."

The incident occurred at roughly 2 a.m. Sira said the pair left the Broadalbin Hotel after midnight.

Route 155 between Route 30 and the Broadalbin village line was closed for several hours Sunday after the crash.

The investigation is continuing.

Officials are asking that individuals who may have witnessed the incident, or have any information regarding the circumstances to please contact the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (518) 853- 4708.
