A request for proposals deadline for the development of the former Chalmers knitting mills site in the city of Amsterdam has been extended.

The new deadline will be Nov. 26, more than a month later than today's original deadline, said Robert von Hasseln, director of economic and community development for the city.

"We've had a much more positive response than we expected," von Hasseln said Thursday.

The original informational session that the city and local economic planning groups had in September included about 15 developers, von Hasseln said, but since then one after another have been asking for separate meetings.

Over the last couple meetings, von Hasseln said the developers came back and said that it will take them a little time to come up with their proposal, as they really liked the property.

"The only instructions we've given the developers is that it's got to be the highest and best use of the land," he said. "It's much too valuable and much too important to our future."

He said he expects to see at least five to 10 proposals, based on the amount of time that developers have spent with city officials.

"In some cases, I can see the light in their eyes."

Von Hasseln said the city also has some preliminary steps that they must take in order to make new construction there a reality, like having the council pass a resolution, arranging for a commercial property appraisal, and talking through the proposals that come in to narrow down to the best one.

"Amsterdam is beginning a new wave," the director said.
