Recorder's Kelly wins Hendricks award

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Recorder sports reporter Michael Kelly was named the recipient of the Michael Hendricks Young Journalist Award, selected from a pool of entries from across the state, at Wednesday's New York State Associated Press Association banquet. The honor was among five received by the Recorder sports department.

Kelly also earned first and second place in sports writing for the under 20,000 circulation division for stories detailing the Fonda-Fultonville football team's innovative no-huddle offense and Amsterdam resident John R. "Chet" Watroba's involvement with the Amsterdam Zephyrs football team.

Sports reporter Adam Shinder earned a first-place award for sports column writing for "The Aisle Seat," his series of commentaries on local and national sports, with sports editor Paul Antonelli earning second place in the same category for a piece reflecting on his time covering boxing superstar Mike Tyson.

Smith's 682 leads action at Imperial

Chris Smith fired a 682 triple and a high game of 268 to lead bowling action Wednesday night at Imperial Lanes.

Smith posted his high score in the Friendly League and also included games of 257 and 167.

Katie Sheldon, playing in the Wednesday Nite Deserters, led all women bowlers with a 226-619.
