CANAJOHARIE -- Kevin Shannon erupted for 185 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries, and the Canajoharie defense turned in a dominant effort against an undermanned Bishop Gibbons team as the Cougars rolled to a 41-0 triumph in Section II Class D South Division action Friday night.
Shannon scored on runs of 45 and 12 yards in the first quarter to give the Cougars an early 14-0 lead, then punctuated his night with an 85-yard jaunt in the third quarter. Shannon also recovered one of five fumbles forced by the Canajoharie defense.
Nick Taylor and Jace Fox each threw touchdown passes for Canajoharie (4-1, 1-1 South Division) -- Taylor's a 33-yard strike to Zach Folts in the second quarter, Fox's a 56-yard connection with Dillan Veeder in the fourth quarter for the first touchdown pass of the freshman's high school career. Canajoharie also got a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Seth Ferguson to open the second half.
Defensively, the Cougars held a Bishop Gibbons team that was forced to forfeit its Week 4 game against Cambridge due to a lack of available players to just 79 yards of total offense while forcing six turnovers -- five fumble recoveries and an interception.
Canajoharie travels to play at Catholic Central on Friday night.
