Lady Rams volleyball picks up first win

TOWN OF AMSTERDAM -- The Amsterdam Lady Rams volleyball team earned its first win of the season Tuesday, besting visiting Troy at Amsterdam High School.

The Lady Rams won in four sets: 27-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17.

"The kids are starting to put it together," AHS head coach Christine Sherlock said.

Cassidy Orocho had five aces, six assists and four kills for AHS, while Yari Laboy had four aces and four kills. Also for AHS, Brittanie Brown added three aces, four assists and three kills; Cassandra Santiago had three blocks and one kill; and, Destinee Smith had a pair of aces and kills.

Amsterdam improved to 1-2 in Big 10 play with the win.

"The improvement that I have seen this week is very encouraging," Sherlock said.

Western Athletic Conference

Galway 3, Mayfield 1

The Lady Eagles picked up a big victory in four sets: 10-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-15.

Galway (5-0, 5-0) received 10 kills, five blocks and three digs from Emily Zawisa, while Rachel Jones had seven digs, six kills and four aces. Rachel Sherman added seven kills and five blocks, and Brittany Orminski had 12 digs and six kills.

For Mayfield (4-1 WAC), Kaylee Bumpus had 14 kills and six blocks, and Mackenzie Biggers had 15 assists.

GIRLS SOCCER

Big 10

Amsterdam 3, Troy 1

The Lady Rams continued their strong start to the season as Monica Rouse had two goals and an assist to spark a victory over Troy.

Diana Constantine also scored for the Lady Rams (5-1, 2-0 Big 10), while Kayla Abbattisti assisted on one of Rouse's two goals.

Western Athletic Conference

Northville 2, Galway 0

Lyndsey Wadsworth assisted on goals scored by Tessa Hadland and Mary Ryan, as the Lady Falcons picked up their second win of the season.

Galway keeper Nicole Cassale made 10 saves. Mallory Hook had six saves for Northville in the shutout.
