Early morning raid nets arrests

After a two-month investigation, authorities arrested three people and searched two homes for cocaine and heroin in Amsterdam early this morning.

During the raid that began at about 6 a.m., officers seized more than half an ounce of cocaine, approximately $3,400, and various drug paraphernalia from two locations in the city, Det. Lt. Kurt Conroy said.

The Amsterdam Police Department was joined by the State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement team and Montgomery County Sheriff's Regional SWAT team and department in executing two search warrants for the second-floor of 183 Church St. and 49 James St.

At press time this morning, Conroy said two people remained at large from the Church Street address, where more than $1,300 was recovered, and as of this morning they were attempting to locate both individuals for whom they have active arrest warrants. The warrants cite charges of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class B felony. These arrests were still pending at 11 a.m.

One arrest warrant is for Angel Rodriquez-Morales, 28, of the first-floor of 49 James St. He will be charged with heroin sales, police said. The other active warrant is for Giovania Matias, 38, of the same address.

The group of agencies also helped in the arrests of three individuals who were charged.

Steven Velasquez, 26, of 31 Carmichael St., apartment 2, was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance for cocaine sales, a class B felony; and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony, for possessing more than half an ounce of cocaine during the warrant service.

More than $2,000 was seized from this location.

Velasquez also had an outstanding bench warrant from Amsterdam City Count for failure to appear.

Vivian Rivera, 28, of 11 Clinton St., apartment 1, was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class B felony, for cocaine sales; and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Denise Reyes, 40, of 92 Union St., apartment 2, was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class B felony, for cocaine sales.

The three arrested defendants were held for arraignment in Amsterdam City Court this morning before Judge Howard M. Aison, who signed the arrest and search warrants.

Montgomery County District Attorney James "Jed" Conboy assisted in the investigation.
