Amsterdam Police Sgt. Owen Fuhs was involved in a car accident on the morning of Sept. 1 in which he broke several bones and had a lung collapse, officers say.

Police Chief Gregory Culick said that Fuhs was driving in the western part of the county, off-duty and alone, and in efforts to avoid hitting a dog, he swerved into a ditch and his vehicle burst into flames.

"The guy that actually helped him out of the ditch said, 'Yeah, I actually just let my dog out,'" Culick said. "It could have been his dog that he tried to avoid and at the same time this guy was there to save him and pull him out of his car while it was burning. Quite a story."

Culick said he had surgery on his hip, but he has heard that Fuhs is doing "pretty well, but he's going to be laid up for a while."

Culick said Fuhs had just been getting in shape so this will be especially disappointing for him.

"He had just been back up and doing quite a bit of physical activity," Culick said. "I know he was up to running like five miles a day again and this is a terrible setback for Owen, who loves to get out there and get physical."

Culick said when someone's out sick, other supervisors will cover the short shifts, though he doesn't want Fuhs to rush his recovery.

"Hopefully he'll mend well, but he's going to have to use all the time he needs to heal," Culick said.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office investigated the accident.
