Mr. Robert Gargiulo, 78 years old of W. Main Street, died Saturday after a brief illness. He was born March 31, 1935 in Amsterdam, a son of John and Emelia Ferrara Gargiulo and was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam. Bob was a graduate of the former Wilber H. Lynch High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Air Force. He was employed by United Welding of Amsterdam and then by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady. During this time he also painted houses on the side. In retirement Bob worked for Damiano's Flowers in Amsterdam.
He attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, both in Amsterdam. He was a member of American Legion Post 701. Bob was an outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader and looked forward to vacationing at the Jersey shore. Bob loved his family and especially time spent with grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marlene E. Husted, whom he married December 9, 1966. Bob is also survived by a son Eddie (Barbara) Hume of Broadalbin, his daughters Susan R. (Duane) Butts of Broadalbin and Cathy (Don) Gardner of Stratford, his brother Jim Gargiulo of Texas, his sisters Rose Gargiulo of Amsterdam and Vicki of Niskayuna, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter Arlene Jennings, grandchildren Wade and Joshua Jennings and his sisters Frances and Gloria.
Funeral services will be held 10:00am Tuesday September 3, 2013 at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, with Fr. John Medwid and The Rev. William T. Hodgetts, Jr. coofficiating. Burial is in Hagaman Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 3 until 6:00pm on Monday at the funeral home.
