Mrs. Sylvia M. La Grange, 78, of VanDerveer St. , Amsterdam, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday August 19, 2014 at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady.
Born in Amsterdam, NY on September 20, 1935 a daughter of the late Anthony and Irene Krupa Matthews. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam.
Sylvia was employed by the former Mohasco Industries in Amsterdam as an executive Secretary for many years. She then worked for the New York State Dept. of Corrections for 20 years retiring in the late 1990s. She was also the EAP Coordinator for the Department of Corrections. Mrs. LaGrange was a communicant of the former St. John's Church in Amsterdam and was a member of the Rosary Society of the church.
Sylvia loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She loved the outdoors especially in the Adirondacks. She also loved motorcycles and would enjoy going to the Americade in Lake George, NY.
She married Watson A. LaGrange on October 3, 1954. In addition to her loving husband of almost 60 years she is survived by her children, Watson A. Jr. (Rebeccca) LaGrange of Ft. Johnson, NY and Mary Beth (Walter) Martin of Amsterdam; grandchildren, Amanda Beth Meyers and James W. III (Kristin) Meyers of Amsterdam; step-grandchildren, Melissa Klementowski of Tribes Hill, NY, Anthony Sculco of Amsterdam, Tara Beth (Jay) Martin, Sandra Marie (Brian) Pallotta and Vicki Martin all of Amsterdam; great-granddaughter, Emily Leonard of Amsterdam; one brother, Richard (Linda) Matthews of Olean, NY,one sister, Cynthia Bouck of Schenectady, NY. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday August 22, 2014 at 7:00P.M. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, with Father Stanislaus "Stan" Swierzowski presiding.
Interment of cremated remains will be on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11:00A.M. at St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday August 23, 2014 prior to the funeral service from 6:00 to 7:00P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery County SPCA or to the Adirondack Mountain Club.
