Archeologist to speak at site

Christina Reith, the State Archeologist and Director of the New York State Museum's Cultural Resource Survey Program in Albany, will speak at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

The New York State Museum's Cultural Resource Survey Program recently conducted archeological excavations in advance of the renovation of Routes 443 and 30A in the town of Schoharie, Schoharie County New York. The site consists of remnants of a small camp situated along the valley wall. The results of this excavation produced information about the lives of the Native groups in the Schoharie Valley and their use of local materials in the past.

The location of the site along the junction of the Schoharie and Fox Creeks was ideal and would have facilitated travel into the Upper Schoharie and Hudson Valleys. In addition materials, pieces of Pennsylvania Jasper were recovered indicating interactions with groups living in the Middle Atlantic Region. The implications for understanding pre-contact settlement and the interactions of these groups will be discussed in this talk.

Following the lecture refreshments will be served, and there will be a meeting of the Friends of Schoharie Crossing. All are welcome to attend the meeting.

For more information about this event, please call the Visitor Center at (518) 829-7516. For more information about New York State Parks, visit the website at www.nysparks.com.
