Members of the Amsterdam police and fire departments responded to a report of a car lodged in a Church Street home's first-floor window Sunday evening.

Gertrude Wojtkiewcz, 93 years old, was leaving a friend's home on Church Street and reversed her car over the curb and into the front window of the home across the street -- 238 Church Street. A resident of the home the driver was leaving said Wojtkiewcz "just got confused."

The home was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

Officer Keelan Zyzes, who first arrived to the scene, said in the process of backing out from a driveway across the street, Wojtkiewcz appeared to have meant to hit the brakes, but her foot slipped onto the gas pedal and she accelerated across the street, through the front yard and into the house.

The resident of the home the driver was leaving from said Wojtkiewcz told her because of the heavy traffic, she was trying to drive between the oncoming cars.

Another resident of that home, who said Wojtkiewcz was visiting him, said he warned her to be careful crossing the road, because traffic on Church Street is often heavy and many cars exceed the speed limit.

"She probably had a moment with all the cars and got really confused," the female resident said.

There were two occupants in the car, both sustaining minor injuries and they were brought to the hospital to be examined. The passenger in the car was 90-year-old Florence Reisigl. Both women were speaking with medical personnel while being wheeled into the ambulance.

The car didn't appear to have much damage, though the trunk opened during the crash. A tow truck removed the car from the house soon after the car's occupants were taken to the hospital.

As of Sunday night, Zyzes said a report on the accident was not yet complete. He said he thought charges against Wojtkiewcz were unlikely.
