Church organ featured in concert

Tuesday, August 19, 2014 - Updated: 6:25 AM

STONE ARABIA -- Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5426 Route 10, announces a worship service with special music on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m.

The church's historic 1901 Morey organ will be played by Jonathan B. Hall, with additional music provided by classical saxophonist Bill Powers. All are invited to attend.

Hall and Powers have concertized as the Powers and Hall Duo since 2001, when the two were students at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University, Bloomington. Hall earned the doctor of music degree, and is the music director of Central Presbyterian Church in Montclair, N.J.; he also teaches music theory and music criticism at New York University.

Powers, a student of Eugene Rousseau and Otis Murphy, is also a professional in the field of development and fundraising, and is finishing another degree at Indiana University, this one in philanthropic studies.

Before and after the service of worship, the organ will be prominently featured in prelude and postlude music. Hall will be explaining the music and why he chose it for this instrument, and also discuss the organ itself, which is both unusual in design and extremely well-preserved. The music played will range from baroque to contemporary classical and represent composers from Germany, Holland, Italy, England, and the United States.

All of it has been chosen to work well on the Morey organ, which was built in Utica and transported on a barge. The instrument has only one keyboard, which is small for a pipe organ, and there are no pedals. The organ has six stops, or sets of pipes.

"Within those limitations, it is still astonishing how much color, how much music, that organ possesses," Hall said.

A reception with refreshments will follow the service.
