Mohawks news and notes for Thursday

Thursday, July 31, 2014 - Updated: 11:48 AM

* Head coach Keith Griffin said Tuesday that he will not know his starting pitchers for the PGCBL East Division Championship Series until today. He said at least two of E.J. Ashworth (5-0, 2.02 ERA), Ryan Clark (3-0, 2.31 ERA) and Connor Johnstone (3-2, 3.27 ERA) will start in the series, but that it was possible a Game 3 starter could be a hurler outside of that trio.

* The club's bullpen is a little short for the postseason. Thomas Hackimer (knee) and Brandon Whitmore (shoulder) are out for the remainder of the season, Griffin said Tuesday. Whitmore had compiled a 0.90 ERA in 20 innings between starting and relieving, and Hackimer had struck out 44 batters in 27 2-3 innings while recording a 0.98 ERA and a team-high six saves.

* It is possible 2012 and 2013 Mohawks pitcher Chris Kalica could rejoin the team for the postseason. Griffin confirmed that the right-handed pitcher had been added to the team's roster in time to be eligible for the postseason, but the skipper was unsure if Kalica will be available to the Mohawks this postseason. For most of the summer, Kalica has been pitching in the NECBL for the Mystic Schooners.
