GLEN -- A Perth man is accused of raping a woman in a wooded area at the Schoharie Crossing boat launch.
Justin R. Milonovich, 46, of 4293 Route 30 Lot 12, was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Tuesday and charged with third-degree rape. He is being held at the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.
Investigator Theresa Pingitore said the victim reported the alleged rape July 13, two days after it happened. The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident, and was treated and released from St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
She said the subjects knew each other, and were "hanging out" at the boat launch at 195 Hartley Lane, which has picnic tables and an area where people often fish.
"It was light out when they arrived. They were down there for quite a while, and it got dark. The suspect allegedly took advantage of the opportunity, put her on the ground and there was unwanted intercourse," Pingitore said.
Pingitore believes the incident is isolated, and said she doesn't want residents to be alarmed.
"They knew each other. They went there together," she said.
Pingitore said it's not unusual that the alleged incident was reported several days after it happened.
"More often than not, that is the case due to fear, or maybe other factors, such as fear of threats, or shame," Pingitore said.
After the incident was reported, an investigation was conducted and Pingitore made the arrest with assistance from the Amsterdam Police Department, Sexual Assault Support Services, and the county district attorney's office.
Pingitore declined to say whether Milonovich has a criminal history.
He was arraigned in town court before Justice James Law before being sent to jail.
