Ralph W. "Rex" Whitbeck, age 50, of Gloversville, passed away at home on Sunday morning July 21, 2013 following a long battle with HIV/AIDS under the care of his husband and Mountain Valley Hospice.

Born on August 7, 1962 in Gloversville, he was the son of the late Ellsworth Whitbeck II and Ella Cline Harppinger.

Ralph was employed as a waiter and bartender in Albany until the onset of his illness.

Rex was a member of the First Congregation U.C.C. of Gloversville and volunteer for the AIDS Council of Northeastern, N.Y. and Centro Civico of Amsterdam.

Survivors include his husband David J. Darling whom he married on August 7, 2011; his son Sgt. Joseph (Kelly) Dolder of North Carolina; his daughter Courtney Rose (Steve) Diaz of Gloversville; one brother Ellsworth (Sharon) Whitbeck III of Gloversville; Kathleen (Thomas) Meacham of Ravena; several grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday at 2:00 P.M. at the Maple Avenue Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.
