Local man sentenced in child porn case

FONDA -- An Amsterdam man who was arrested on child pornography charges last year was sentenced to up to three years in prison Monday.

William S. Davis, of 27 Academy St., was sentenced at Montgomery County Court in connection with his plea bargain in June, according to officials in the office of District Attorney James E. "Jed" Conboy.

Davis pleaded guilty to possessing an odd scene of a sexual performance of a child. He was arrested twice -- first in January, and then in March -- on the charges, which stem from an investigation by the Amsterdam Police Department in November 2012.

Police said at the time of the original arrest, the investigation had been started by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the New York State Division of Parole, after child pornography had been found on Davis' computer.

The images reportedly dealt with children under the age of 16.

Davis has been incarcerated since his initial arrest.

In other court news:

* Nygee J. Roby, 19, of 27 McDonnell St., Amsterdam, was sentenced in connection with a January gang assault in the city.

Roby was sentenced to six months in jail, five years of probation, 100 hours of community service, and ordered to pay $728 in restitution.

Police said Roby was arrested with two other men after the trio assaulted and robbed an individual on Market Street. The victim's belongings were taken, including a bracelet, a cell phone and a soccer bag.

The victim reportedly suffered minor injuries as a result of the assault and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital on Guy Park Avenue, where he was later released, police said.

* Jason F. Shutter, 24, of 105 Mohawk St., Canajoharie, pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree assault.

He was arrested after a May 10 incident in the village after a fight with his girlfriend.

Shutter will be sentenced Sept. 16 to six months in jail and five years probation.

* Veronica M. Bennett, 40, of 16 John St., Amsterdam, was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay $715 in restitution.

Bennett pleaded guilty in May to third-degree criminal mischief in connection with an incident April 16. Bennett, who was reportedly drunk at the time, broke two windows and fought with two women.
