Irene C. Austin

Irene C. Austin, 85 formerly of Ft. Plain, NY passed away Friday July 18, 2014 at the Valley Health Services Center in Herkimer following a long illness.

Born in the Town of Root, NY on September 26, 1928 a daughter of the late Henry and Marcia Vosburgh Christman. She was a lifelong area resident and attended Canajoharie Schools.

She worked at the former Phil Wick Mills and Beech-Nut in Ft. Plain for many years. She was also a homemaker and took great care of her family.

Irene married Charles W. Austin on September 26, 1948. He passed away on July 22, 1994.

She is survived by her daughter Sheila Haponski and her husband Arthur of Cold Brook, NY; two cherished grandchildren, Amanda Haponski Bagley and Alexis Haponski; two sisters, Evelyn Mahr and Alice Tracey; one sister-in-law, Florence Austin. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Irene was predeceased by her brothers, Charles, Del, John, Roy, and Harry Christman and a step-brother, Ronald Guyette.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday July 22, 2014 at 10:30A.M. at the Fort Plain Cemetery in Fort Plain, NY with Rev. Cynthia Leonard presiding.

There will be no calling hours or visitation.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Plain Fire Department, 168 Canal St., Fort Plain, NY 13339.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, NY 13317.
