Harriet F. Thackrah

Harriet F. Thackrah, 93, formerly of Church Street, died peacefully Thursday evening at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where she had been residing for the last several years. She was born in Amsterdam on December 15, 1920, the daughter of Bronislaw and Anna Raczkowski Foltman.
Enlisting in the WAVEs, Harriet joined five of her brothers in the service of our country during World War II. Later she became the first woman veteran to serve as Commander of James T. Bergen Post 39 American Legion.
After the war she became a graduate of New York University and in October of 1955 entered into Holy Matrimony with Herbert T. Thackrah, a union which lasted until his death in December of 1980.
She served as a Pre-K and elementary school teacher in the Greater Amsterdam School District for many years, retiring in 1982.
Harriet is survived by three children, Mary (Robert) Going of Amsterdam, Florence (David) Kale of Blue Bell, PA and John Thackrah of Wilmington, NC; seven grandchildren, Anna (James) Barker, Robert N. (Jenna) Going, Jr., James F. Going, Louisa Going, Zoë Kale, Samson Kale and Ian Thackrah; and one great-grandchild, Laura Ann Porcello. She is also survived by a brother, William Foltman of Princetown, NY, as well as her Wilkinson family, whose loving care and friendship made her final years cheerful ones.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 10:30 at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church at 11:00 with Rev. Stanislaus Swierzowski officiating, after which she will be buried with full military honors at St. John's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends for one hour prior to the services.
