Gerald S. Smrtic, 64, passed away Friday morning at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Amsterdam on May 3, 1950, the son of the late Steven and Olga Cetnar Smrtic, he was a 1968 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Gerald later received his B.A. degree from SUNY Albany. He then began a thirty year career with the U.S. Social Security System, retiring as an administrator in 2003. He loved fishing, golfing and spending time at the Saratoga Race Track in season. His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his family, especially his two beautiful grandchildren. Jerry coached his daughter's Cinderella Softball team and his son's CYO Basketball team during their school years.

On August 12, 1972 he was united in marriage to Sharon Palombi.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his daughter Kristin Smrtic and her husband Richard McMahon of Guilderland; his son John Smrtic of Amsterdam; grandchildren Katie and Patrick McMahon; his sister Susan Harrold and her husband Michael of Albany; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 39 St. John Street, Amsterdam by Fr. Lawrence J. Decker. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday from 4-7 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern NY, 4 Pine West Plaza, Albany 12205 or the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY, 965 Albany Shaker Road, Latham 12110 or Mt. Carmel Memorial Fund, PO Box 699, Amsterdam, NY 12010. Please visit his family's on-line guestbook at
