Mohawks, Dutchmen suspended in 10th

Saturday, July 06, 2013 - Updated: 1:28 AM

Staff report

Nine innings and two rain delays weren't enough to decide a winner in a bizarre game Friday night between the Amsterdam Mohawks and Albany Dutchmen at Shuttleworth Park, which was suspended before the start of the 10th inning tied 4-4 due to rain and unplayable field conditions.

The teams battled the elements to even get on the field Friday night, as a brief but furious downpour about 30 minutes before the scheduled 7:05 p.m. first pitch left most of the infield under water. After more than an hour of work on the field by the Amsterdam players and staff, Mohawks starter Trey Wingenter finally delivered the first pitch of the night at 8:14 p.m.

Wingenter then allowed a two-run first inning home run to Albany's Bradley Noland, putting Amsterdam in an early hole. The Mohawks pulled back to 3-2 by the end of the fourth inning before a Chris Bianchi sacrifice fly restored a two-run lead for Albany in the fifth. However, Amsterdam's John Sansone ripped a two-run double in the sixth to tie the game, and despite both teams having chances, neither could push across the deciding run through nine innings.

Then, before play could begin in the 10th, rain fell again and after a brief delay -- which included the long-awaited postgame fireworks display -- the game was suspended. It will be resumed at the beginning of the 10th inning when Albany next visits Shuttleworth Park on Thursday.
