James O. Dygert

James O. Dygert, 75, of Canajoharie, NY passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Healthcare in Amsterdam after a brief illness, his loving family was by his side.

Born in Marshville, NY on October 15, 1938, the son of the late Arthur H. and Elva Frantzman Dygert.

Jim graduated from Canajoharie High School in 1956. He served in the United States Army in Germany from November 1961 to November 1964. He was a proud veteran. He was a member of the Elks Club and a major racing enthusiast, everyone knew to look for Jim in the flag stand at Fonda Speedway. Jim also enjoyed watching basketball.

Above anything, Jim was a hard worker, upon returning from the military, he worked for the Fort Plain Packing Co., he then owned and operated Jim's Sunoco Gas and Service Station in Fort Plain for many years, after that he drove truck locally for School House Pools and SLA Transport.

He is survived by his loving step children, George Gibson, III and his son Christopher and Connie Veeder and her children, both of Canajoharie, sisters Eugenia Desmond of Marshville and Ethel Heiser of Rochester, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and extended family.

Jim also leaves behind his grandson and true friend, Frankie Ponte. They were known to pal around together and Jim was a major part of his life and will be truly missed.

He is predeceased by long time companion Sandra Horning.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 from 4pm until 7pm.

A funeral service will take place Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 11am at the funeral home Rev. David Bowley as officiant.

Burial will follow with Military Honors at the Fort Plain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please stop by Jim's favorite spot and have a meal at the Village Restaurant, Church Street in Canajoharie. Tell them Jim sent you!
