At the age of 99 we say our final farewell to a devoted wife and mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother who taught us all the true meaning of how to live, laugh and love. She leaves a everlasting hand print on each one of our hearts.
Elvera was born March 21, 1915, a daughter of Stephen and Pasqulina DeSorbo in Herkimer, New York.
She resided in the Amsterdam area most of her life and attended local schools. At a very young age she started working at Chalmers and later worked for the Mohawk Carpet Mills. She retired after working for her parish church as a cook.
She was a long standing communicant of the former St. Michael the Archangel Church and now Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a member of the Columbian Social Club Auxiliary and many area Senior Citizen Groups in Amsterdam, where she enjoyed the company of many good friends.
She was an avid lover of the Saratoga Flat Track and of horse racing; the New York Yankees; and was always up for a good card game.
She loved to cook and her greatest pleasure was holiday gatherings with her family and friends. Elvera also loved to crochet; she made many special gifts for all of her loved ones.
On Oct. 4, 1936, she married her beloved husband Peter DiCaprio at St. Michael's Church. That union lasted over 70 years with his passing on Oct. 28, 2006.
She is survived by her three loving sons, Alfred (Stephanie) DiCaprio of Raleigh, N.C., Richard (Kathy) DiCaprio of Ballston Lake, N.Y., and Ronald (Audie) DiCaprio of Fort Johnson, N.Y.; eight cherished grandchildren, Marc (Sarah) DiCaprio, Stephanie (Harry) DiCaprio-Brown, Alfred DiCaprio, Peter (Jeanine) DiCaprio, Richard DiCaprio, Kristen (Joseph) Priamo, Cory (Kerri) DiCaprio, Jason (Danielle) DiCaprio; 15 beloved great-grandchildren; one sister, Molly Natale. She also leaves a brother-in-law, many sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elvera was predeceased by her infant son, Peter DiCaprio, three brothers, Joseph, Alfred and Louis DeSorbo, and one sister, Mary Emanuele.
The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday, July 2, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, N.Y.
Funeral services are Thursday, July 3, 2014, at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home, followed at 11:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Lawrence J. Decker as Celebrant.
Elvera will be laid to rest next to her husband in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam or Edward L. Wilkinson Health Care Facility in care of the funeral home.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and nurses at the Edward L. Wilkinson Health Care Facility for their compassionate and loving care that they gave our Mom during the last years of her life.
