Ruth Pedersen Marshall

June 25, 2013

Ruth Pedersen Marshall, 92, died Tuesday, June 25, at the Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility where she resided for the past six years. Born May 18, 1921 in Mandal, Norway, she was the daughter of Aletta and Aamen Pedersen. Ruth came to the United States when she was 17, arriving in New York City to visit her aunt. When the war broke out, she remained in New York City working as a dental assistant and a nanny and began learning English. In NYC, she met and married her husband, Matthew Thomas Marshall. They lived together in New York City, Pennsylvania and Utica before moving to Amsterdam. In 1952, they bought the Chelsea House in Tribes Hills which she ran with her husband for twenty-five years. She was also the co-owner of the Knit and Purl Shop with her good friend, Helen S. Charles.

Ruth had an amazing zest for life and was a strong, resilient woman. She rose above her paralysis of thirty years to become independent, living alone for sixteen years. While others saw her as being confined to a wheelchair, she truly believed that she was blessed and went on with her life traveling the world, visiting her children and grandchildren, and fully living each and every moment. For the last twelve years, she was a faithful member of the Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church and took great pride and enjoyment in watching and listening to her daughter Bonnie preach.

She is pre-deceased by her husband Tom, two brothers John and Karl Pedersen, one sister Aasta Pedersen Berg, and a grandson Andrew Mark Carlson.

She is survived by her three daughters, Joan M. Carlson, Atlanta, GA, Dr. A. Susan Murphy, Hermosa Beach, CA, and the Rev. Bonnie M. Orth (Jay), Mayfield, NY; grandchildren Laura Ruth Carlson, Deborah (Mike) Dickerson, Shannon Murphy, Allison (Travis) Tracy, Robert G. (Sandra) Stewart Jr., John Henry Stewart, Evan Orth and Olivia Orth; five great-grandchildren Tessa and Sean VanVactor, Amanda Stewart, and Montana and Graham Dickerson; niece Aasta Camille Berg; and, nephew Kenneth Berg.

A witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ and a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church, 22 N. Main Street, Mayfield, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name toward an outdoor labyrinth for the Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church, PO Box 432, Mayfield, NY 12117.
