The Amsterdam Lions Club will meet at Bosco's, 165 Division St., at 5:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.


An American Red Cross blood drive will be held at the Hamilton County Public Health Nursing Services, 99 Church St., from 1 to 6 p.m. Call (800) 733-2767 or visit for more information and to make an appointment.


The Fort Plain Youth Sports Organization will have youth soccer signups in the elementary school lobby from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $25 per child for children entering grades K through 6. Players do not have to live in or attend the school district. For any questions, contact Melinda Herron, at 774-5062.


The regular monthly meeting of Mountain Valley Hospice volunteers will be held in the conference room at 108 Steele Ave. at 1 p.m. For any questions, or to make reservations, contact Tammy Zumbo or Helen Christiansen at 725-4545.


The Red Rooster Cafe will host Tom Kilinski, energy services director, Fulmont Community Action Agency, who will present an energy savings workshop. Each participant will receive a free energy savings gift. The program follows the weekly congregate meal, which is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Programs are held Thursdays at the Red Rooster Cafe (Pink Chicken) at the corner of Bridge and Main streets, Northville. Those who wish to enjoy the OFA meal are asked to call Fulton County OFA at 736-5650 to make lunch reservations.



The Montgomery County Ladies of Charity will hold their annual golf tournament at Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course. Price includes 18 holes of golf, dinner, lunch, prizes and raffles. Prayer and praise night at Jubilee Fellowship, 349 Forest Ave., at 6 p.m. The community is invited to pray for the city and our leaders.

A strawberry shortcake social and themed basket raffle will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Calvary Reformed Church. The shortcake is $3.50. Basket tickets are one for $1, three for $2, and 10 for $5.


Photography Up Close with Harry Wirtz will take place at the SVAN Art Center, 132 S. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Advanced one-day workshop in close-up photography of small things. Bring your DSLR camera with accessories, tripod, and Mac or Windows laptop with image editing software. Contact Harry Wirtz at 863-8636 before registering. Bring lunch or buy it nearby. Tuition is $50; SVAN members $45.



St. Ann's Episcopal Church, 37 Division St., will serve its community meal from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On the menu are hot dogs, meat sauce, beans, salad and dessert. The meal is free and open to all. There are no takeouts.


Rick's RoBo Car Wash is once again sponsoring the Shuttleworth Park Foundation 5K Road/Trail Race. The race begins at 5:30 p.m. Runners will loop around the park, onto the road course, and then back onto the baseball field for the finish. Cost is $20 and participants will receive a free t-shirt plus a family pass to that night's Mohawks game, which begins at 6:35 p.m.


A benefit will be held for Jessica Merendo who was injured in a car accident. This will take place at Johnstown Moose Lodge, 109 S. Comrie Ave., from 1 to 5 p.m. Food and beverages will be provided with music by In Tunes. There will be an auction, gift certificates and raffles. Cost for tickets will be $10 for adults; children 6-12, $5; free for children 5 and under, and may be purchased at: Applebee's, Johnstown; Recovery Room, Amsterdam; Johnstown Moose Lodge; Rockton House, Amsterdam. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Donations can be made to Fulton County Federal Credit Union, 355 Hales Mills Road, Gloversville. Checks made payable to "Help Give Jessica Merendo a Hand."



First day of the Summer Reading Program will take place at Amsterdam Free Library at 10:30 a.m.


A Writers' Workshop with Patricia A. Nugent will take place beginning today and continuing through Aug. 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Monday. Writers of all genres will gather weekly to share their work in this writers' group for literary enhancement and critique. Poets, essayists, playwrights, song writers, storytellers, and novelists are all welcome. This eight week course will culminate in a reading for the community at the Inn at the Bridge. Contact Nugent at 863-6950 if interested. Tuition is $55 for eight weeks; SVAN members $50; $10 for single sessions.
