Ronald J. Mead

Ronald J. Mead, 69, of the Town of Florida, NY, passed away Saturday June 14, 2014 unexpectedly due to a construction accident with his sons by his side.

Born on May 9, 1945 a son of James M. and Jean Kimball Mead of Mead Rd. in the Town of Florida, NY.

Ron attended the former Yankee Hill School One Room School House until merging with the Amsterdam School District. He graduated in 1963 from the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He went on to attend Ricker College in Maine for one year until transferring to the University of Georgia. After one semester at Georgia, Ron decided to pursue a degree in Agriculture so he transferred to SUNY Cobleskill where he graduated with an Associate's Degree in Animal Husbandry.

After graduating Ron worked for Agway in Mohawk as an assistant manager and later transferred to the Amsterdam Agway on the south side.

In 1972 Ron joined his father to work on the family farm and in 1974 formed a partnership now called Floridale Farms. Slowly they increased the herd and built a state of the art Dairy Barn in 1979.

Ron was active in many organizations over the years. Young Farmers, Masonic Lodge, Farm Bureau, Served as President of the Board of Directors for Farm Credit, The Florida Reformed Church and the Town of Florida Snowmobile Club.

He was elected Town of Florida Supervisor in 1994 where he served for 7 years and enjoyed the fact he was making an impact in the area he lived and raised his family. In this capacity he chaired and sat on many committees. Following his run as Town Supervisor, Ron was appointed to a position with the New York State Division of AG & Markets where he currently worked on a part-time basis.

Ron married the former Barbara K. Butt on April 21, 1968. They made their home on Mudge Hollow Rd., just across a four acre field from the family farm. They later resided at the farm after renovating his grandparent's home.

Survivors include his father, The Honorable James Mead of the Town of Florida. Ron's beloved wife, Barbara K. Mead of the Town of Florida, two cherished sons, Brian (Laurie) Mead of Amsterdam, Eric (Sandy) Mead of Amsterdam; loving grandchildren, Emily, Cole, Madison, Kylee and Katie Mead; niece Kara Lais; nephew Kristopher (Christina) Lais and their two children, Makenah and Mason; dear aunts, Marion Betz of Amsterdam and Eleanor Mead of Vestal, NY; mother-in- law, Katherine Butt of West Burne, NY. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Ron was predeceased by his mother Jean Mead, a sister, Connie, father-in-law, William Butt, brother-in-law, Rich Lais.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 19, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY with Rev. William Faulkner presiding.

Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday June 18, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00P.M. at the funeral home.
