Canales charged with host of offenses

Saturday, June 15, 2013 - Updated: 4:09 AM

The Amsterdam Police Department arrested and charged Jorge L. Canales, 26, of 331 East Main St., with third-degree burglary, a class D felony; fourth-degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor; and, resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor, Thursday.

Early Thursday morning, APD received a report of a burglary in progress at 2 Chuctanunda St. The victim reported hearing someone attempting to break into her business, Emmy Lou's Diner, while she was working in the kitchen. Officers responding to the scene discovered a freshly damage side door, and allegedly found Canales hiding under a vehicle in the location's garage area. The suspect resisted officers' commands to come out from underneath the vehicle, but he was eventually extricated from his hiding spot and taken into custody.

Once in custody, the victim identified Canales as someone who had entered her shop the day prior to inquire if she was hiring.

Canales was held for arraignment in Amsterdam City Court.
