Third graders at R.J. McNulty Academy performed patriotic songs and offered a crowd of their classmates, teachers and parents facts about Flag Day on Friday morning.
"What's red, white and yellow?" one third grader asked another at the mic. "The star-spangled banana," he answered, sending the gymnasium into an uproar of laughter.
The third graders, dressed in red, white and blue clothing and adorned with American flag ribbons and hair extensions, sang "America, the Beautiful," "Grand 'Ol Flag," "God Bless the U.S.A.," and "50 States that Rhyme," the most challenging song for them to learn.
Their music teacher, Karen Scherer, who accompanied the young singers on piano, incorporated American Sign Language into the performances.
A proud Todd Giagni, principal, said the students did a "phenomenal job."
