Nine arrested in welfare fraud investigation

FONDA — Eight people accused of scamming the system were arrested recently in an investigation by the Montgomery County Department of Social Services Welfare Fraud Unit:

• Jolene Magielda, 24, of 11 Fourth Avenue, Apt. 1, Amsterdam was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, and fifth-degree welfare fraud. Investigators said Magielda was previously disqualified and not eligible for benefits.

• Glorimari Rodriguez, 37, of 18 Williams St., Amsterdam, was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony. She reportedly falsified a food stamp application with inaccurate household composition.

• Alexander Rivera, 36, of 26 Eagle St., Amsterdam, was charged with four counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, and third-degree welfare fraud, class D felony. He allegedly falsified a food stamp applications and received $6,942 in benefits he wasn’t eligible for.

• Kim Ann Soto, 45, of 100 Charles Lane, Apt. U-8, Amsterdam, was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony. Police said she failed to report unemployment insurance benefits.

• Rhonda Hartin, 50, of 19 McDonnell St., Amsterdam, was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony. She allegedly falsified employment documents in an attempt to remain eligible.

• Michael Oliver, 46, of 44 W. Main St., Fonda, was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, for falsifying employment documents, police said.

• Toni Cornell, 34, of 19 Putnam St., Amsterdam, was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, for falsifying household composition on an application, police said.

• Dawn Edgar, 37, of Grand St., Amsterdam, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, for allegedly falsifying employment documents.

The suspects were scheduled to appear in Mohawk town court June 10 at 5 p.m.

The investigation was conducted under the direction of supervising investigator Michael J. Villa with the assistance of the district attorney’s office, the sheriff’s office, and the Amsterdam Police Department.
