Henry J. Malec

Henry J. Malec, 74, of Hernandez Road, Wells died Monday morning June 10, 2013 at home.

He was born in Gloversville on March 21, 1939 a son of Henry Malec and Anna Podolski Malec. Mr. Malec was a1956 graduate of Broadalbin High School. Following graduation, Henry enlisted in the US Navy where he proudly served for four years.

He obtained an Associates Degree from Albany Business College, and later attended Empire State College. He continued his education through the New York State Unified Court System as a Town Justice.

Mr. Malec was a New York State Trooper, retiring in 1988 as a Senior Investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He was currently serving as the Town Justice in Wells, having been elected in 1999.

Henry was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin and a current member and lector at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wells. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7629 of Broadalbin.

Mr. Malec was a member of the New York State Magistrates Association, the Hamilton County Magistrates Association, the New York State Police Benevolent Association, the Former Troopers Association, and a national member of the American Legion.

His hobbies included playing saxophone for the "Pretty Good Band" of Speculator and performing in productions as a member of the Mountain Art Consortium. In addition, he enjoyed polka dancing and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Polly A. Malec in 1988, and his sister, Joan Wojtowicz, who died in 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Michele Flynn Malec, whom he married on July 29, 1989; two sons, Henry J. Malec, Jr. of Schenectady, and Matthew S. Malec of Broadalbin; three daughters, Joan (Steven) Smith and Patricia (Thomas) Rebisz, all of Broadalbin, and Jennifer (Anthony) Petrelia of Mayfield; four stepsons, Karl (Margaret) Albrecht of Fonda, Thomas J. Chicoski of Charleston, Kenneth Chicoski of Wells, and Daniel (Tina) Albrecht of Rockledge, FL; a stepdaughter, Angela Butler of Buffalo; two brothers, William (Sarah) Malec of Fredericksburg, TX, and J. Michael Malec of Albany; seven grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 am at St. Ann's Catholic Church 1303 State Highway 30 Wells with Rev. Sony Pulickal, officiating.

Burial will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery at 2:00pm.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5:00- 8:00pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Broadalbin or St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wells, both in care of the funeral home.
