"We're here to celebrate, remember and fight back," Deborah Liggero, captain of the Scully's Angels fundraiser said Thursday night at the Municipal Golf Course.
Liggero and Michaela Joyce organized this year's fourth annual Scully's Angels event to help raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on June 6.
Liggero and Joyce started the fundraiser to honor their friends Nancy Lee DeRocco Wells and Karen Houlihan Golden, who died from cancer. Wells and Golden were both 1977 graduates of Bishop Scully High School.
"Two years ago [Golden] started a golf team for [Wells] to help benefit her when she had cancer," Joyce explained. "But at that time, [Golden] herself had cancer, too."
The fundraiser included wine and beer tasting from local vendors, appetizer samplings and gift basket raffles.
All of the proceeds went to Liggero and Joyce's Relay for Life team.
"We're advocates for fighting cancer," Liggero said. "We do what we can. We were blessed to be [Golden's] and [Wells'] friends and we smile because we got that opportunity."
"This is a chance to have a good time, celebrate the lives of our friends, but also raise money to fight cancer," Joyce said.
Liggero said she was expecting the fundraiser to bring in about $3,000, the same as last year's.
