Smith, Klock lead OESJ to Class D title

TROY -- Dylan Klock continued his torrid postseason hitting pace with a 4-for-5 afternoon, Brad Smith scattered three hits in a complete game effort and the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Wolves pounded out 12 hits in beating top-seeded Fort Ann, 7-1, in the Section II Class D baseball championship game Thursday at Joe Bruno Stadium.

The Wolves pounced on Fort Ann starter Tyler Mattison early, plating two runs in the first on a Devan Battisti two-run triple. Joe D'Antonino added an RBI groundout in the second and Nate Trumble contributed a two-run single in the third as OESJ chased Mattison after just 2 1/3 innings.

On the mound, Smith -- who assumed the No. 1 spot in the Wolves' rotation early in the season when a shoulder injury left Klock unavailable to pitch -- didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and recorded six strikeouts to notch his program-record ninth win of the year and give OESJ its second Section II championship in the first year since the merger between the St. Johnsville and Oppenheim-Ephratah school districts. OESJ also won the Section II Class D girls soccer championship in the fall.

It was the first sectional baseball title for the program since St. Johnsville won the Section II Class D title in 1987.

OESJ will next compete in the New York State Class D tournament starting June 6 at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam against the Section X champion.
