Samuel J. Steele

Samuel J. Steele, 82, of Foxwood Drive, New Jersey died Tuesday afternoon May 20, 2014 at his residence on First Avenue, Broadalbin.

He was born at home in Broadalbin on January 19, 1932 a son of Samuel and Gertrude Zajaceskowski Steele and was a 1949 graduate of Broadalbin High School.

Mr. Steele had a thirty one year career in the United States Navy where he rose to the rank of Master Chief Petty officer and served during the Korean Conflict and Viet Nam War. After retiring from the Navy in 1982, he began a second career as a senior engineering technician for inspection and repair of Aegis Class Cruisers and Destroyers. Mr. Steele was employed with George G. Sharp, Inc. for eighteen years, Basic Commerce & Industries for seven years, and most recently for Grypon Technologies in Philadelphia.

Mr. Steele was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin.

Sam was a member of the American Legion Post #337 and a life member of the VFW Post #8690, both in Broadalbin. He was also a member of the USS Beatty (DD-756) Association, the Fleet Reserves Association, the Tin Can Sailors, Inc., and the Armed Forces Top Enlisted Association.

Sam enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as gardening.

He was married to Thelma Michell on May 27, 1984. She died on September 30, 2000.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Lucinda Steele, of Broadalbin; a nephew, Roger B. Steele, Jr.; and a great-niece and -nephew, Rogeana Marie and Samuel Roger Steele.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Church 7 North Street Broadalbin with Rev. Matthew Wetsel, officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at Union Mills Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5:00-8:00 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church, in care of the funeral home.
