Michael P. George, 89, of Laurel Drive, Amsterdam, NY, passed away on Wednesday evening at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam.

Born June 7, 1924 in Amsterdam, New York he was the son of the late James and Helen Lazarou George. He was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School and a graduate of Bentley College in Waltham, MA with a Bachelors Degree in accounting.

Michael was a U.S. Army-Air Corp Veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theatre with the 880th Bomb Squadron Group.

He was employed as a Tax Examiner for 27 years for the New York State Department of Tax and Finance in Albany until retiring in 1991. After his retirement he worked as a bailiff at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Fonda.

Michael was a member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church; a former member of the Vestry of St. Ann's Church, member of the Amsterdam Masonic Lodge No. 84 F & AM and its Fellowcraft Club and the masonic lodge bowling league. He was a former coach of the Wee Men's Baseball team. Michael was an avid golfer and was a life time member of the City of Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course. He also enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Sacandaga Swingers Square Dancing group and vacationing with his family in Cape Cod.

Michael was known for his humor and friendliness to everyone that he would meet.

On June 21, 1953 he married the former Matilda M. "Tillie" Brown. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Karen Damiano of Amsterdam; three sons, Kevin (Lorri) George of Centennial, CO, David (Lisa) George of Zionsville, IN and Peter (Gloria) George of Centennial, CO; a twin sister Mary Lou George of Amsterdam; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Alexander, Kelsey, Kylie, Skylar, Ryan and Austin; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Michael was predeceased by a grandson, Anthony Michael; a brother, George and three sisters, Alexandra, Magdalene and Olga.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 11 am at the Amsterdam United Presbyterian Church, 347 Golf Course Road, Amsterdam with the Rev. Greg DeSalvatore officiating.

Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, May 12 from 4 to 7pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. A Masonic service will take place at 6:30 pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Michael's memory to the Amsterdam United Methodist Church, 347 Golf Course Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny's Corners Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
