Margaret A. McGuigan McKnight, 95, formerly of the Stratton Apartments, passed away peacefully Friday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson RHCF. She had been a resident of the Hillcrest Springs Assisted Living prior to the nursing home.

Born on August 19, 1918 in Schenectady, the daughter of Frank and Agnes Collins McGuigan, she moved to Amsterdam with her family shortly thereafter.

Margaret was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute and worked for a short time at the Bigelow Sanford Carpet Co.

Margaret's passion was being an advocate for individuals with disabilities. She was a longtime volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital Mental Health Unit and for Domestic Violence programs in Montgomery and Fulton Counties.

On February 21, 1936, she was united in marriage to Edward McKnight who passed away on March 31, 1987.

She was also predeceased by all her siblings, Anna Teeter, Mary Slade, Genevieve Baker, Edward McGuigan, Francis McGuigan, Claire Cook and Agnes Trunkle.

She leaves her daughter Sharon Brooks and husband Frank of Fort Johnson; a granddaughter Collins (Tim) Keehan of Gloversville, grandsons Frank (Kayleigh) Brooks of Atlanta, Ga., Matthew Brooks of Norwalk, Conn., and David (Colleen) Brooks of Houston, TX., as well as a niece and nephew.

Following Margaret's wishes there are no calling hours or services. Memorials may be made in her name to Dr. Michael Sheridan's Avon Breast Cancer Society 5010 State Hwy 30, Ste. 101 Amsterdam 12010.

Her family has entrusted her care to Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue.
