AMES -- A man escaped a bedroom fire Sunday morning at a Latimer Road trailer he rented.

The trailer was a total loss, said Montgomery County Fire Coordinator Dale Furman, but no one was hurt.

It was fully involved when the Charleston Fire Department arrived on the scene after Rural Grove Fire Department received the call at 9:13 a.m. for a structure fire at 1482 Latimer Road. Canajoharie Fire Department also aided those companies.

Furman said a male subject was laying awake in bed when he smelled smoke and noticed the bedroom curtains were on fire. He jumped up, ran down the hallway and got the two other adult subjects out of the home. Pet dogs were also ushered out of the structure, but cats were not seen.

"It doesn't mean they didn't get out, it just means we didn't see them," Furman said.

Furman said the man could have had a much worse fate had he been sleeping.

"If he had actually been sleeping, he never would have made it out of the house," he said.

A cause is still under investigation, but has been narrowed down to two possibilities.

"We can't tie them together, so we need to do some more investigation, and interviews with the homeowners to come to a conclusion," Furman said, adding the rental property had no insurance.

Furman said Sunday's windy weather was problematic during the firefighters' attack.

"The strong winds blew the fire straight through the whole house," he said. "Everyone did a good job though. They knocked the fire down and part of [the trailer] was still standing by the time they got it put out."

Furman said there was a garage nearby but there was no damage to it.

The American Red Cross provided financial assistance for food and clothing to the three affected adults, according to a news release.

GAVAC also responded to the scene, and fire departments from Glen, Fort Plain and Sharon Springs were on standby.
